Embedding Excellence in Writing Across Hales Valley Trust

As part of our strategic drive to embed excellence in writing across all our primary settings, Hales Valley Trust engaged in high-level discussions with Jane Considine, renowned educator and creator of The Write Stuff. This followed significant investment in a consistent, Trust-wide approach to writing, embedded through rigorous professional development, expert coaching, and curriculum alignment.

Jane Considine was so impressed by the strength, coherence, and ambition of our model that she visited the Trust in July to explore collaborative opportunities. Her visit included time in our schools, working directly with staff and leaders to examine how The Write Stuff aligns with the Department for Education’s writing framework.

During her visit, Jane experienced first-hand the impact of our approach. In classrooms across the Trust, she observed:

• Live modelling of high-quality writing by teachers
• Scaffolding that enabled all pupils to access ambitious outcomes
• Sentence stacking to build rich, structured writing
• Feedback as action, used purposefully to move learning forward

Our approach also featured:

• Appointed Write Stuff Advocates in every setting
• Expert coaching systems and IRIS Connect video reflections
• A comprehensive Trust Writing Handbook guiding consistent, high-impact instruction

This model, spanning from Time for Twos to Year 6, ensured progressive, high-quality writing instruction for every pupil. It strengthened leadership at all levels, with leaders confidently monitoring and enhancing practice through targeted, evidence-based support.

It also positioned Hales Valley Trust as a sector leader in writing instruction, with the recognition of Hales Valley as a Write Stuff Advocate Trust. 

This collaboration enhanced our commitment to Success for All, ensuring every child experienced exceptional teaching that equipped them with the literacy skills to thrive.
